Belarus should get rid of carbon dependency, protect domestic market – premier

Belarus should get rid of carbon dependence and other economic dependence, take urgent measures to protect the domestic market in order to facilitate sustainable economic growth at a rate above the world’s average, says Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> The premier made a statement to this effect during a speech in the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus on June 11. The recording was the premier’s speech was posted on Facebook by government spokesman Alexander Isayev. </p> <p> </p> <p> “In the new reality, while facilitating the economy's transition to global energy prices in the context of constantly emerging external threats, our first priority task is to rid our economic system of carbon dependence and other economic dependence, eradicate systemic imbalances, ensure sustainable economic development and the dynamics of welfare growth,” said Golovchenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> In its current activities, the government will focus on economic recovery from the global crisis caused by the pandemic. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The main goal is to achieve sustainable, balanced economic growth at a rate above the global average,” said the premier. </p> <p> </p> <p> He promised, in cooperation with the National Bank, to continue implementing measures to ensure macroeconomic balance, improve the structure of the balance of payments, further reduce inflation and increase the availability of resources for the real sector of the economy. </p> <p> </p> <p> In his words, in the future, economic growth will be based on intensifying exports, diversifying sales markets and improving the competitiveness of goods. He said that in order to solve these problems it is necessary to overcome problems in the industrial sector, and one of the main components is to increase the efficiency of state-owned enterprises. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The Ministry of Industry, according to the head of state, has not yet become the Ministry of Industrial Policy. There is large backlog of problems there, which form, among other things, fiscal risks for the budget. Probably, it is impossible to reduce everything to just the creation of a corporate governance system. We simply do not yet have the right number of vacant managers with the appropriate qualifications. We need to understand and make decisions on all problematic state-owned organizations. I will say that my personal work experience, in particular, in Orsha District, confirms that it is possible to manually put enterprises on the trajectory of development," he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> At the same time, according to Golovchenko, public businesses can and should be efficient. </p> <p> </p> <p> In addition, the government will continue to work on eliminating gaps in the development of regions and solving demographic problems. </p> <p> </p> <p> In his words, “solving all these problems will require maximum mobilization of all government agencies and strict discipline”.
