Belarus’s annual inflation accelerates to 8.7% in Feb 2021

Annual inflation in Belarus accelerated to 8.7% in Feb 2021, reads the monthly inflation review released by the National Bank of Belarus (NBB). </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, inflation in Belarus was 1.9% in Feb 2020, Jan-Feb – 3.1%. </p> <p> </p> <p> Consumer prices rose in Feb 2021 by 8.7% year on year (7.7% y/y in Jan 2021; 7.4% y/y in Dec 2020). </p> <p> </p> <p> Core inflation increased to 8.3% in Feb 2020; 7.5% y/y in Jan 2021 and 7.1% y/y in Dec 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> The increase in administered prices and tariffs accelerated to 8.5%, 7.3% and 6.7% on the year, respectively. </p> <p> </p> <p> Seasonal prices (fruit and vegetables) increased by 15.9% year on year in Feb 2021 to compare with 16% yoy in Dec 2020, and 12.5% yoy in Jan 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> The year-on-year aggregate trend inflation rate was at 6.5% yoy in Feb 2021, 5.6% yoy in Jan 2021 and 5.6% in Dec 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> In February 2021, the maximum and minimum growth rates of free prices and tariffs in annual terms were, in particular, minus 5.6% as regards hotel services; +1.2% - wheat flour; +1.7% - dry goods; +3.4% - milk and dairy products; +17.2% - mayonnaise; +17.4% - jewellery; +17.7% - oil and fats; +18.7% - bicycles; +26.6% - passenger transport services. </p> <p> </p> <p> The maximum and minimum annual growth rates of administered prices and tariffs in February 2021 were, in particular, +1.5% for fuel; +4.1% for communication services; +10.4% for car inspection services; +11.4% for tobacco products; +12.9% for regulated passenger transport services; +20.9% for pharmaceuticals; +31% for personal car insurance services.
