Belarus, Russia can overcome mutual trade decline in 2021 – Golovchenko

Belarus and Russia may overcome in 2021 the 20% year-on-year decline in mutual trade caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister of Belarus Roman Golovchenko said at the meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on January 26, 2021 in Moscow. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The mutual trade decline is not critical despite the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e. a 20% decrease in the trade turnover. I think there are all prerequisites to overcome this decline this year,” said Golovchenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the prime minister, the situation is “totally manageable.” Belarus and Russia have large reserves in the industry, agriculture and construction. “Therefore, direct contacts and result-oriented work is, in my opinion, a priority task for the governments and, accordingly, business entities of our countries,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Mishustin stated that Belarus remained Russia’s main economic partner in the CIS. “In 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, our trade turnover was over $35.5 billion, and Belarus rightfully ranks first among our economic partners in the entire CIS. Of course, the pandemic had its effect, but I would not say it was critical, which also concerns trade,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Golovchenko stressed that Russia traditionally remains the largest trading and economic partner of Belarus. Russia accounted for 44% of Belarus’ total foreign trade in goods and services in January-November 2020. “Apparently, this share will increase a little in reports on December closer to 50%,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the Belarusian-Russian trade turnover totaled $23.6 billion in January-October 2020, down 18.4% against 2019, according to official data.
