Belarus reports $3.578bn foreign trade deficit in 2020
<p> MINSK, Feb 1 - PrimePress. Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities and services amounted to $3.578 billion in 2020 compared with a $6.522 billion deficit in 2019, says the National Statistics Committee of Belarus (Belstat). </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities were down 11.9% year on year in 2020 to $29.041 billion, imports – down 17.4% to $32.619 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities to the CIS member states decreased in 2020 by 7.9% year on year to $17.843 billion; to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) – down 3.9% to $14.003 billion; to Russia – down 4% to $13.132 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports to countries outside the CIS dropped in 2020 by 17.5% on the year to $11.198 billion. Exports to the European Union (EU) decreased by 10.2% to $5.459 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from the CIS in 2020 was down 24% y/y to $18.297 billion; from the EEU member states – down 25.6% to $16.521 billion; from Russia – down 25.6% to $16.387 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from countries outside the CIS decreased in 2020 by 7.1% year on year to $14.322 billion; imports from the EU were down 8.3% to $6.477 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit in foreign trade in commodities with the CIS in 2020 amounted to $454 million against a deficit of $4.685 billion in 2019. The deficit in trade with the EEU stood at $2.518 billion ($7.635bn in 2019), with Russia – $3.255 billion ($8.331bn). </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit in foreign trade in commodities with countries outside the CIS totaled $3.124bn in 2020 to compare with a $1.837bn deficit in 2019. The deficit in trade with the EU in 2020 stood at $1.02bn against a $983.7m deficit in 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Belarus’ foreign trade turnover in 2020, the CIS countries accounted for 58.61% (59.97% in 2019), countries outside the CIS – 41.39% (40.03%); EEU – 49.51% (50.76%), Russia – 47.88% (49.29%), EU – 19.36% (18.15%). </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities in 2019 amounted to $6.405 billion.
