Belarus reports $1.63bn foreign trade deficit in Jan-May 2020
<p> MINSK, Jul 6 - PrimePress. Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities amounted to $1.63 billion in January-May 2020 compared with a $2.383 billion deficit in January-May 2019, says the National Statistics Committee of Belarus (Belstat). </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities were down 20.5% year on year in Jan-May 2020 to $10.483 billion, imports – down 22.2% to $12.113 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities to the CIS member states decreased in Jan-May 2020 by 9.6% year on year to $6.57 billion; to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) – down 5.8% to $5.268 billion; to Russia – down 6.2% to $4.958 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports to countries outside the CIS dropped in Jan-May 2020 by 33.8% yoy to $3.913 billion. Export to the European Union (EU) decreased 29.2% to $1.782 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from the CIS in Jan-May 2020 was down 30.3% yoy to $6.605 billion; from the EEU members states – down 32.5% to $5.886 billion; from Russia – down 32.5% to $5.832 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from countries outside the CIS decreased in Jan-May 2020 by 9.5% year on year to $5.509 billion; imports from the EU were down 6.3% to $2.579 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit in foreign trade in commodities with the CIS in Jan-May 2020 amounted to $34.8 million against a $2.202bn deficit in Jan-May 2019. The deficit in trade with the EEU stood at $617.3m ($3.121bn in Jan-May 2019), with Russia – $874.3m ($3.357bn). </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit in foreign trade in commodities with countries outside the CIS totaled $1.596bn in Jan-May 2020 to compare with a $180.4m deficit in Jan-May 2019. The deficit in trade with the EU in Jan-May 2020 stood at $796.2m against a $232.8m deficit in Jan-May 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Belarus’ foreign trade turnover in Jan-May 2020, the CIS countries accounted for 58.3% (58.26% in Jan-May 2019), countries outside the CIS – 41.7% (41.74%); EEU – 49.36% (49.78%), Russia – 47.75% (48.47%), EU – 19.3% (18.33%). </p> <p> </p> <p> As reported, Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities in in 2019 amounted to $6.405 billion.
