Belarus reports $1.024bn deficit in foreign trade in commodities in Jan-Mar 2020
<p> MINSK, May 5 - PrimePress. Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities amounted to $1.024 billion in January-March 2020 compared with a $981.7 million deficit in January-March 2019, says the National Statistics Committee of Belarus (Belstat). </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities decreased in Jan-Mar 2020 by 14.7% year on year to $6.636 billion; imports were down 12.6% to $7.66 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports of commodities to the CIS grew in Jan-Mar 2020 by 2.6% year on year to $4.229 billion; to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) member states – up 5.7% to $3.381 billion; Russia – up 6.1% to $3.188 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Exports to outside the CIS decreased in Jan-Mar 2020 by 34.2% year on year to $2.408 billion; export to the European Union (EU) decreased 29.7% to $1.121 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from the CIS decreased in Jan-Mar 2020 by 23.1% year on year to $4.215 billion; from the EEU – down 26.2% to $3.752 billion; from Russia – down 26.8% to $3.701 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> Imports of commodities from outside the CIS grew in Jan-Mar 2020 by 4.9% year on year to $3.466 billion; imports from the EU – up 2.2% to $1.552 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Belstat, the surplus in foreign trade in commodities with the CIS stood at $14 million in Jan-Mar 2020 ($1.358 billion deficit in Jan-Mar 2019); the EEU – $371.6 million deficit ($1.887 billion deficit in Jan-Mar 2019); Russia – $513.3 million deficit ($2.051 billion deficit in Jan-Mar 2019). </p> <p> </p> <p> The deficit in foreign trade in commodities with countries outside the CIS totaled $1.038 billion in Jan-Mar 2020 to compare with $376.6 million surplus in Jan-Mar 2019. The deficit in trade in commodities with the EU in January-March 2020 stood at $431.3 million against a surplus of $75.2 million in Jan-Mar 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> In Belarus’ foreign trade turnover in Jan-Mar 2020 the CIS accounted for 59.05% (58.03% in Jan-Mar 2019), countries outside the CIS – 40.95% (41.97%); the EEU – 49.89% (50.04%), Russia – 48.18% (48.7%), the EU – 18.7% (18.81%). </p> <p> </p> <p> As reported, Belarus’ deficit in foreign trade in commodities amounted to $6.405 billion in 2019.
