Belarus’ potash fertilizer exports down 3.58% in Jan-Jun 2020 to 3.265m tonnes

Belarus exported 3.265 million tonnes of potash fertilizers (in terms of 100% potassium chloride) in January-June 2020, down 3.58% year on year, the National Statistics Committee (Belstat) said in a report. </p> <p> </p> <p> In value terms, potash exports fell 20.05% year on year in Jan-Jun 2020 to $1.169 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> The average export price of Belarus’ potash fertilizers stood at $358 per tonne in H1 2020, down 21.3% year on year. </p> <p> </p> <p> The decrease was due to the unfavourable environment on the global potash market since mid-2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> Due to the imbalance between supply and demand and, as a result, the drop in prices for potassium chloride, many major players in the potash market, including Belaruskali (Soligorsk, Minsk Oblast) had to reduce production. Belaruskali had to reduce workload (down to 30%) in the period from September 2019 to April 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> In addition, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, negotiations for a contract with China in 2020 were delayed for a longer time than before. As a result, Belaruskali did not have long-term contracts to supply fertilizers to China from July 2019 to April 2020, and to India from July to October 2019. At the end of April, Belarusian Potash Company (BPC, the sole export trader of Belaruskali) signed a contract with China for supply of $220 per ton of chlorine in 2020 ($70 per ton lower than the previous contract). May 18, BPC signed a contract with India's largest company IPL for supply of potash fertilizers in 2020 at a price of $230 per ton ($50 lower than the previous contract). </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Belarus reduced potash fertilizer export by 5.8% year on year in 2019 to 6.23 million tonnes in terms of 100% potash. In value terms, the export increased in 2019 by 2.3% yoy to $2.78 billion. The average export price of Belarusian potash fertilizers in 2019 stood at $445.8 per tonne (up 11.3% from 2018). End </p>
