Belarus’ NPP personnel adequately trained – Ministry of Energy

The Ministry of Energy of Belarus has recruited and trained personnel for operating the first powr unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Astravyets District, Grodno Oblast), Deputy Energy Minister of Belarus Mikhail Mikhadyuk said during the online briefing held on May 11. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Mikhadyuk, back in 2016, Belarus invited experienced foreign specialists, primarily from Russia and Ukraine, to occupy senior positions, including the chief engineer and his deputies and foremen for the main shops. “We selected them specifically so that each shift has a person with relevant background,” said Mikhadyuk. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Ministry of Energy also engaged in training specialists. “The main group that we invited came from enterprises of the energy system of Belarus. They are energy specialists with a basic energy education. They underwent retraining at Russian universities, post grad schools and NPPs,” said Mikhadyuk. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Belarusian NPP currently employs 316 graduates of Belarusian universities, who have underwent specialized training and passed internship courses at Russian nuclear power plants. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Region also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts, which are slated to be launched in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The Belarusian nuclear station’s design stems from the AES-2006 design developed by the St Petersburg-based institute Atomenergoproject, which is also the general contractor of the Belarusian project.
