Belarus’ net FDI inflow down 12.6% in Jan-Jun 2021 to $1.185bn

The net inflow of foreign direct investments (FDI) decreased by 12.6% year on year in Jan-Jun 2021 to $1.185 billion (excluding debt to direct investor for goods, works and services), Belarus’ National Statistics Agency (Belstat) said in a report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus defines foreign direct investments as those made by direct investors, whose stake in the statutory capital is at least 10%. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ net FDI inflow in the real economy sector totalled $945.26 million in Jan-Jun 2020, down 13.3%, banking sector – down 13.1% year on year to $197.38 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> Region-wise, the largest net FDI inflow in January-June 2021 was registered in Minsk City - $618.62 million (+0.6% yoy). Net FDI in Minsk Oblast amounted to $223.227 million (minus 23%) in January-June 2021; Gomel Oblast - $74.858 million (minus 30.1%); Grodno Oblast - $60.943 million (minus 31.6%); Brest Oblast - $64.256 million (minus 20.8%); Vitebsk Oblast - $27.019 million (minus 36.7%) and Mogilev Oblast - $73.712 million (minus 20%). </p> <p> </p> <p> Sector-wise net FDI inflow in H1 2021: manufacturing industry - $435.33 million (minus 18.4% yoy), financial and insurance organizations - $225.089 million (+10.6%), information and communication - $190.78 million (twice as much), wholesale trade - $91.39 million (minus 45.4%). </p> <p> </p> <p> Net FDI outflow was registered in January-June 2021 in the telecom sector to the tune of $34.482 million (to compare with net FDI outflow of $38.136 million in January-June 2020). </p> <p> </p> <p> Country-wise net FDI inflow in H1 2021: from Russia (the main investor of Belarus) decreased by 13.8% yoy to $275.584 million; from Cyprus - increased by 36.3% to $278.215 million; from the Netherlands - decreased by 3.4 times to $39.937 million; investments from Germany - $50.878 million (minus 13.4%); from Lithuania - $36.312 million (minus 22.6%); from Great Britain - $26.125 million (minus 22.5%); from USA - $20.039 million (minus 45.6%); from Poland - $12.332 million (minus 40.2%); from China - $24.025 million (+21.8%); from Switzerland - $29.064 million (+18.5%). </p> <p> </p> <p> In January-June 2021, there was a net FDI outflow from Azerbaijan in the amount of $3.323 million ($1.477 million in H1 2020); from Singapore in the amount of $1.165 million (to compare with net FDI inflow of $7.451 million); from Lebanon in the amount of $749.8 thousand (to compare with net FDI inflow of $1.126 million). </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ net FDI inflow from the countries of the European Union in January-June 2021 decreased by 9.3% and amounted to $515.793 million; from the EEU countries - by 14.4% to $278.528 million. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, net FDI increased 6.6% yoy in 2020 to $1.415 billion.
