Belarus’ Neman tobacco factory may encounter difficulties – Lukashenko

Grodno Tobacco Factory Neman OJSC (GTF) may face difficulties in the future, as there is always high competition in the excise goods trade and countries are trying their best to protect their markets. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko made a statement to this effect on June 24 while making a business trip to Grodno Oblast, the president’s press-service reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> Lukashenko said that this is one of the reasons why Belarus is accused of cigarette smuggling. “They are getting ready to somehow protect themselves from trade in cigarettes. These are excise goods, direct income to the budget. That is why Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and Russia are trying to protect their market. That is why they are howling now that we have saturated their markets with smuggled goods. So go ahead and fight against smuggling like we do,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Grodno Tobacco Factory Neman has been operating since 1861; in December 2007 it was transformed into a joint stock company. All the shares of the company are owned by the state. Neman’s product range includes more than 90 brands of cigarettes, including more than 40 own brands for domestic and foreign markets. The factory also produces cigarettes under world famous brands as a contract manufacture for British American Tobacco and Tobacco International Enterprises Limited. End </p> <p> </p>
