Belarus National Bank refutes allegations about active preparations for single currency with Russia

Statements by the opposition People’s Anti-Crisis Directorate about the authorities intensifying preparations for launching a single currency of Belarus and Russia are fake news and “an outright lie”, the press service of the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) told RIA Novosti. </p> <p> </p> <p> “This statement has nothing to do with reality. It is another crudely concocted fabrication, an outright lie and fiction,” said the press service. </p> <p> </p> <p> On Thursday, the Anti-Crisis Directorate reported in its Telegram channel, citing sources at the National Bank of Belarus, that “active work on signing a road map for a single currency with Russia was resumed.” The report stated that “it is not clear yet whether the matter concerns the creation of the emission centres both in Belarus and Russia or the total dependence of the financial system of the country on the Kremlin.” </p> <p> </p> <p> After the presidential election of August 9, 2020, which was won for the sixth time by Alexander Lukashenko, who, according to the Central Election Commission, collected 80.1% of the vote, mass opposition protests began in the country, which were suppressed by the security forces with riot control weapons. The protests are still going on, the opposition believes Svetlana Tikhanovskaya to be the winner of the elections. Law enforcers claim Belarus’ protests have grown radical, the number of participants in reducing, rallies moving from city streets to the courtyards of apartment buildings. </p> <p> </p> <p> The People’s Anti-Crisis Directorate was created by one of the leaders of the Belarusian opposition Pavel Latushko, who left for Poland.
