Belarus Ministry of Nature Protection, UNDP implementing project to recycle hazardous waste from agricultural enterprises

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Belarus are implementing a project to recycle obsolete pesticides of agricultural organizations. This is reported by the press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> The work is carried out under the international technical assistance project “Sustainable Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants and Chemicals in the Republic of Belarus, GEF-6”. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Ministry of Environment Protection reports that 20 tonnes of unusable pesticides from warehouses in Vitebsk Oblast were sent to Germany for disposal in October 2021. The hazardous waste will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way (high-temperature incineration). </p> <p> </p> <p> Besides, according to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus Alexander Korbut, at present Poland’s Geocoma provides services of environmentally safe destruction of unusable pesticides from warehouses of Vitebsk and Grodno regions in the total amount of 920 tons. The waste will be sent to specialised plants in Germany and destroyed. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Korbut, hazardous waste is transported in accordance with international and national requirements. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the Ministry of Environment Protection, now there are more than 10 thousand tons of unusable or banned pesticides in Belarus, including those related to persistent organic pollutants.
