Belarus’ MFA spikes rumors about new Russian loan request
<p> MINSK, Feb 15 - PrimePress. Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei has not confirmed the information that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko will discuss a new Russian loan at the meeting planned for late February 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> Media claimed that Lukashenko was going to ask for $3-3.5 billion from the unused part of the Russian $10 billion state loan for the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Astravyets District, Grodno Oblast). </p> <p> </p> <p> Makei said that cooperation in the financial and credit sector will be touched upon during the talks. “But this does not mean that Belarus will necessarily ask Russia for loans or some assistance,” said Makei. </p> <p> </p> <p> Earlier, on February 11, the Finance Ministry of Belarus did not confirm the information about the new loan request either. </p> <p> </p> <p> Putin said during his meeting with Lukashenko on September 14, 2020 that Russia would loan Belarus $1.5 billion. Belarus received $500 million from the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD) in October 2020 and the first tranche of the Russian state loan in Russian rubles in the equivalent of $500 million on December 30, 2020.
