Belarus legalizes possibility to restrict operation of telecommunications networks in case of threat to national security

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed a law that amends the law on telecommunications, including the possibility of limiting the operation of telecommunications networks and their components in the event of threats to national security, the president’s press service said in a statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The document provides that in order to prevent situations that threaten national security, the state may take measures to restrict the functioning of telecommunication networks and their components (reducing the time and amount of their use, changing modes of operation), suspend networks and their components (temporary suspension of their work)," the message says. </p> <p> </p> <p> It is established that the powers to manage the public telecommunications network are given to the operational and analytical centre under the President of the Republic of Belarus. “Failure by telecommunications operators to comply with the requirements to suspend or limit the operation of telecommunication networks and their components will be a gross violation of the law on licensing of activities in the field of communications,” the press service said. </p> <p> </p> <p> The law enters into force after its official publication.
