Belarus interested in Russia’s participation in construction of nitrogen plant, reconstruction of M1 motorway

Belarus is interested in Russia’s participation in investment projects to build a new nitrogen complex at Grodno Azot and to rebuild the M1 motorway from the Russian border to Brest, Deputy chief of the Lukashenko Administration Dmitry Krutoy said on April 2 at a ceremony titled “Union State: Opening New Opportunities”. </p> <p> </p> <p> “In addition to the large-scale nuclear power plant project (Belarusian NPP – editor’s note), we invite our Russian colleagues to participate in such major investment projects as the construction of a nitrogen complex at Grodno Azot and the reconstruction of the Belarusian section of the M1 motorway," Prime reports citing Krutoy as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, while meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Feb 22, Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko suggested Russia’s Gazprom should take part in modernizing nitrogen fertilizer producer Grodno Azot. </p> <p> </p> As previously reported, in 2014 the Belarusian government put up for sale a block of shares in Grodno Azot, with the following terms and conditions to be fulfilled by a potential investor: an initial payment of $414 million, investment of another $1.6-1.8 billion and an additional payment of at least $440 million to gain control of the plant. The potential investor also had to supply 2 billion cubic metres of gas annually to the mill. Gazprom abandoned the project because it believed the asset was overvalued. End
