Belarus interested in launching BelNPP Unit 2 within contract term
<p> MINSK, Sep 9 - PrimePress. Belarus is extremely interested that Unit 2 of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) is commissioned within the time frame envisaged in the contract, said Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> “For Belarus, the construction of a nuclear power plant is an extremely important project. We need to meet regularly, compare notes and solve the issues that arise during the implementation of such a complex, large-scale project. The first unit was put into commercial operation in June this year. Work is underway on the construction of the second unit. We are extremely interested that it is commissioned within the time frame envisaged in our contract,” Golovchenko said at a meeting with Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom. </p> <p> </p> <p> The audio record of the meeting was made public by the press-service of the Belarusian government. </p> <p> </p> <p> Golovchenko noted that on behalf of the head of state, Belarusian specialists, in cooperation with their Russian colleagues, have drawn up a list of promising areas of cooperation in nuclear energy. The list covers such important areas as environmental monitoring, nuclear medicine, setting up a joint centre for nuclear scientific research at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and many others, the prime minister said. </p> <p> </p> <p> He also added that the Union State program on nuclear energy is aimed at developing relevant cooperation between the two countries. “We are interested in the cooperation in the operation of nuclear power facilities, ensuring nuclear and radiation safety, emergency preparedness and also management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. In the future this program may involve the conclusion of an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of transportation of nuclear materials and management of spent nuclear fuel of the Belarusian NPP,” said Golovchenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> Currently Belarus is working to develop a unified state system for radioactive waste management. “We will be grateful to Rosatom State Corporation for consulting assistance in this regard, taking into account the rich experience of the Russian Federation,” said Golovchenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. The first power unit of the NPP was put into commercial operation on 10 June 2021, the second power unit – due in H1 2022. End </p> <p> </p>
