Belarus’ industry under pressure due to internal political strife – Lukashenko

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko made a statement to this effect on Aug 27 at a meeting with the government to analyze the development of the core companies controlled by the Ministry of Industry. </p> <p> </p> <p> Lukashenko says the industry has faced several challenges this year: first - foreign markets closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, now there is a difficult domestic political situation. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The impact of this pressure on the domestic economic situation is tangible. I would like to emphasize once again: no one will give us any gratuitous help. We have to count on our own strength and capabilities,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Lukashenko urged companies to step up efforts in order to promote sales of Belarusian-made products both at home and in foreign markets. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Industry Minister Piotr Parkhomchik, Belarusian industrial enterprises operate in the normal mode. In his words, the psychological environment in the industrial sector has got back to normal over the past week. The minister assured that there are no economic reasons for possible strikes. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the National Statistics Committee (Belstat), the total debt of Belarusian enterprises stood at Br145.2 billion ($54.8 billion at the rate of the National Bank of Belarus) as of July 1, 2020, up 9.3% since early 2020. As of July 1, 2020, 76.8% of Belarusian companies had overdue accounts receivable (75.6% as of January 1, 2020), and 63.4% (62.1%) had overdue accounts payable. </p> <p> </p> <p> Warehouse inventories as of July 1, 2020 increased by 13.8% to Br5.524 billion ($2.085 billion; $1 - Br2.6483) as of July 1, 2019. Warehouse inventories accounted for 78.1% of the average monthly output as of July 1, 2020, to compare with 63.4% a year earlier. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belstat says warehouse inventories of finished products accounted for 78.1% of the average monthly output (63.4% as of July 1, 2019), the worst ratio of warehouse inventories to production output since 2014.
