Belarus’ govt spends $750-800 in public funds to fight COVID-19 – Lukashenko

Belarus has already spent $750-800 million in state budget funds alone on the coronavirus response, and nearly as much was spent by companies and organizations of all forms of ownership. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko made a statement to this effect on Aug 12 at a working meeting to discuss the production of COVID-19 vaccines at BelVitunipharm (Vitebsk District), the president’s press-service reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> “As of now, there are no major reasons for concern in Belarus. I want to assure everyone once again: we are dealing with this calamity pretty well. Without unnecessary information noise, political squabbles, demonstrations, and curfews like they do in certain countries,” said Lukashenko. </p> <p> </p> <p> In his words, Belarus has provided financial assistance at all levels, including bonuses for healthcare professionals, purchase of medicines and vaccines, production of face masks, disinfectants. </p> <p> </p> <p> It should be reminded with reference to the president’s press service that Lukashenko said on 3 Dec 2020 that the country had already spent nearly $1 billion on COVID-19 response alone. On 9 August 2021, Lukashenko said that Belarus had spent $1.5 billion on treating people for coronavirus, and said that due to the pandemic, Belarus had asked Russia for a new loan. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the Health Ministry of Belarus, about 1.48 million Belarusians received the first dose of vaccine against COVID-19 as of 12 Aug 2021. More than 1.16 million of them were fully immunized. A total of 457,422 people have been registered in Belarus with a positive test for COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. As many as 451,598 patients previously diagnosed with COVID-19 have recovered and 3,572 thousand patients diagnosed with coronavirus infection have died. End </p>
