Belarus’ govt does not interfere in state-owned enterprises’ business activities – Golovchenko

The government of Belarus does not interfere in the business activities of state-owned enterprises, yet continues to supervise their strategic development plans, willing to hear advice from independent economists, Prime Minister of Belarus Roman Golovchenko told reporters at Belshina OJSC (Bobruisk, Mogilev Oblast) on October 28, 2020, the government’s press secretary Alexandra Isayeva wrote on Facebook. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We do not interfere, we monitor, making sure that the plans are well thought out. Those who have been claiming otherwise for some reason of late are obviously misguided. We hear a lot of advice from independent economists on how to build the economy of Belarus. We welcome any advice, concrete and down-to-earth, only rejecting crude guidelines that may only be worth putting on textbooks for university freshmen,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> On October 27, more than 60 Belarusian and foreign economists signed an open letter addressed to Belarusian society, in which they declared their willingness to share expertise in developing a program of economic reforms. They said that without the resolution of many accumulated structural problems, Belarus will increasingly lag behind from its neighbors and world’s leading economies in terms of living standards. The situation has been aggravated by the political crisis, which, among other things, is undermining economic confidence. In the short term, this could lead to financial cataclysms and a decrease in households’ well-being. The experts formulated 11 principles that can help create an institutional framework for solving structural problems and achieving sustainable long-term growth. End </p>
