Belarus’ gold, FX reserves up 11.6% in Jun 2020 to $8.796bn

Belarus’ gold and foreign exchange reserves calculated in accordance with methods of the International Monetary Fund totaled $8.796 billion as of July 1, 2020, being up 11.6% in June 2020, says the Information and PR Department of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The reserves increased in June primarily thanks to the placement of Eurobonds by the Ministry of Finance, and a rise in the value of monetary gold,” reads the report. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Belarus completed the placement of two Eurobond issues worth a total of $1.25 billion on June 24, 2020. Bonds worth $500 million will mature in February 2026, the yield being 5.875% per annum; bonds worth $750 million will mature in February 2031, the yield being 6.378% per annum. </p> <p> </p> <p> In June 2020, the government and the National Bank of Belarus paid off $287 million under foreign and domestic liabilities in foreign exchange. </p> <p> </p> <p> Reserve assets in the form of monetary gold increased in June 2020 by 2.3% to $2.8 billion; in the form of special drawing rights - increased by 0.9% to $513 million; in foreign exchange - decreased by 5.3% to $4.216 billion. Other reserve assets grew 7-fold in June to $1.267 billion. </p> <p> </p> <p> The international reserve assets of Belarus, calculated according to the IMF methodology, decreased in January-June 2020 by 6.4%. </p> <p> </p> <p> Reserve assets in the form of monetary gold increased in January-June 2020 by 17.3%; in the form of special drawing rights – down 0.2%; in foreign exchange – down 24.1%. Other reserve assets increased by 35.4% in January-June 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> In accordance with the 2020 guidelines for Belarus’ monetary management policy, Belarus’ gold and foreign exchange reserves are supposed to reach at least $7.3 billion as of Jan 1, 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ international reserves calculated in accordance with methods of the International Monetary Fund stood at U.S. $9.394bn as of Jan 1, 2020; $7.158 billion as of Jan 1, 2019; at $7.315bn as of Jan 1, 2018; $4.927bn as of Jan 1, 2017; $4.176bn as of Jan 1, 2016; $5.059bn as of Jan 1, 2015; $6.651bn as of Jan 1, 2014; $8.095bn as of Jan 1, 2013.
