Belarus’ GDP likely to decline by 0.8% in 2020 – Economy Ministry

Belarus’ GDP may decline by 0.8% year on year in 2020, First Deputy Minister of Economy Yuri Chebotar said on CTV TV channel. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We think we will be able to achieve just 99.2%,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Chebotar, a quarter of industries showed better performance than last year. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Performance of around a half of them is worse than last year, yet we this trend towards improvement since early summer. In general, the gross domestic product decline was the greatest in summer, to 98% [down 2% year on year], and now we see a gradual recovery,” Chebotar said. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Belarusian authorities forecasted 2.8% GDP growth in 2020. However, Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said on November 2, 2020 that the government was making efforts to achieve zero GDP growth in 2020 against 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ GDP grew in 2019 by 1.2% year on year to Br131.952 billion ($52.638 billion at the exchange rate of the National Bank of Belarus), the official growth forecast being 4%.
