Belarus’ GDP likely to be down 0.5% in 2020 – Lukashenko

Belarus’ gross domestic product (GDP) can decrease by 0.5% year on year in 2020, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said when visiting Horizont Holding Managing Company (Minsk) on January 5, 2021, the presidential press office reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the president, unlike other countries, Belarus managed to achieve a minimum GDP decline in 2020, because industrial enterprises were not shut down during the coronavirus pandemic. </p> <p> </p> <p> Lukashenko welcomed the setup of an innovation center at Horizont. He said that recently established competence centers in the IT sector alongside the Hi-Tech Park promote robust competition. “We needed an alternative in the country, and you are a good alternative,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Economy Ministry of Belarus said earlier that Belarus’ GDP was likely to decline by 0.8% year on year in 2020, the forecasted growth being 2.8%.
