Belarus’ FinMin considers borrowing from Russia for joint infrastructure projects

The Finance Ministry of Belarus is considering the possibility of taking Russian loans for joint infrastructure projects, says Finance Minister of Belarus Yuri Seliverstov. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Borrowing, including from Russia, for joint projects, including infrastructural ones, has been a long-standing matter. It is on the agenda now as well,” said Seliverstov. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, prior to the meeting between Presidents of Belarus and Russia Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin held on February 22, 2021, the Russian media claimed that Russia would consider giving Belarus a new loan of $3 billion. Commenting on the infrastructure development plan for the next five years, which would cost $10.9 billion, Prime Minister of Belarus Roman Golovchenko said that Belarus hoped for Russian and Chinese loans for that. </p> <p> </p> <p> Putin said during his meeting with Lukashenko on September 14, 2020 that Russia would loan Belarus $1.5 billion. Belarus received $500 million from the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD) in October 2020 and the first tranche of the Russian state loan in Russian rubles in the equivalent of $500 million on December 30, 2020.
