Belarus expects AIIB approval of healthcare project funding

Minsk expects the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to approve credit funding for healthcare projects in Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ Embassy in China has issued a statement to this effect following a meeting between Belarus’ Ambassador to China Yuri Senko and AIIB President Jin Liqun on Jan 21. </p> <p> </p> <p> During the meeting the diplomat that the bank CEO discussed the current progress regarding the projects currently under consideration by AIIB. </p> <p> </p> <p> “The Belarusian side emphasized the timeliness of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank's adoption of the program to mitigate the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Belarusian ambassador expressed the hope for the bank's early approval to provide financial resources to support the healthcare system of Belarus,” says the embassy’s press statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> The parties also confirmed the importance of continuing work on the ongoing infrastructure projects in Belarus: reconstruction of the R46 Lepel-Polotsk road, construction of a railway link Minsk – Great Stone Industrial Park - National Airport, and others. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, in 2020, Minsk requested $350 million in AIIB funding to support Belarus’ banking system. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is an international financial institution. The idea to establish such an institution was proposed by China. The AIIB began operations in January 2016 and now has 100 approved member states. The largest shareholders are China, India and Russia. Belarus joined the AIIB as a non-regional member in 2019. The bank's stated objectives are to promote sustainable economic development and improve business linkages in Asia by investing in infrastructure and other productive sectors of the economy. The priority areas for funding are energy, transport, water supply and treatment, urban development and infrastructure. End </p>
