Belarus’ Energy Ministry plans to connect second unit of BelNPP to power grid in 2021

The Ministry of Energy of Belarus plans to connect the second unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) to the national grid in 2021, Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadiuk said on April 2 at a ceremony titled “Union State: Opening New Opportunities”. </p> <p> </p> <p> “We are at the final stage of (commissioning – editor’s note) the first power unit, and it has already generated over 1.8 billion kWh into the grid. And we plan to include the second unit into the grid this year as well,” Prime reports citing Mikhadyuk as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> Moscow has proposed further nuclear energy cooperation to Minsk, Mikhadyuk also said on Friday. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Literally yesterday we received a large package (of proposals) from Russian organizations, which expressed their significant interest in work in the sphere. It is not only about operating a nuclear power plant, but also joint projects abroad. And also there were many proposals in the sphere of nuclear medicine,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> Mikhadyuk also said that Belarus had previously sent its proposals to Russia. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. The first power unit of the NPP is expected to be put into commercial operation in 2021, the second power unit – in 2022. End </p>
