Belarus’ Emergencies Ministry okays launch of NPP’s first power unit

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Belarus amended the license issued to the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant Republican Unitary Enterprise (Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) for operations with atomic energy and ionizing radiation sources for the phased energy startup of the 1st power unit, says the press office of the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor). </p> <p> </p> <p> This follows Gosatomnadzor’s documentation expertise that confirmed safety and NPP’s readiness for operation. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Gosatomnadzor, the issuance of the license to operate the 1st power unit of the NPP will be preceded by public hearings to build the public awareness of the progress and findings of the safety review and assess the applicant’s compliance with the license requirements. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. End </p>
