Belarus’ economy steadily recovering after COVID restrictions – premier

Belarus' economy is gradually recovering from the restrictions related to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, judging by the GDP growth rate, Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at a meeting of the Council of Ministers on 18 May, the government press service reported. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Belarus’ year-on-year GDP growth rate in January-April was 2.5%. A good result was registered in industry - 11%. The agriculture is gradually forming positive dynamics - in April we have added 0.2 p.p. over January-March (to minus 0.3% year on year – editor’s note). The wholesale turnover added 6.1 p.p. and the catering sector added 14.8 p.p. These indicators characterize the gradual recovery from COVID restrictions,” the press service reported citing Golovchenko as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> Golovchenko added: “An increase in the unemployment rate was prevented thanks to the steady operation of the real sector. Unemployment totalled 4% in March according to the methodology of the International Labour Organization while the annual forecast is 4.2-4.4%.” </p> <p> </p> <p> Real household incomes, according to Golovchenko, grew by 2.9% year on year in Q1 2021.
