Belarus due to hold presidential election Aug 9, 2020

Belarus’ presidential election has been officially scheduled for Aug 9, 2020, as proposed by the lower chamber of the country’s parliament (the Chamber of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus). </p> <p> </p> <p> The law says presidential elections must be held on a Sunday not later than two months before the expiration of the incumbent president’s term, i.e. not later than Aug 30, 2020. The previous presidential election in Belarus was held on Oct 11, 2015. </p> <p> </p> <p> Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina says the 2020 presidential election will be held in a very unique setting. </p> <p> </p> <p> “It will be very different from all the presidential election campaigns held before,” the BelTA newswire reports citing Lidia Yermoshina as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> She added that observers shall comply with the recommendations of the Healthcare Ministry on social distancing and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). For now, the matter concerns national observers only. The CEC head said she cannot yet say whether international experts will come to Belarus to observe the election. In line with the Health Ministry’s recommendations, sessions of region (oblast), district (rayon) and city executive committees to discuss election-related issues will be held in the absence of observers, representatives of political parties and NGOs. </p> <p> </p> <p> The first presidential elections in Belarus were held on June 23 (first round) and July 10, 1994 (second round). On October 17, 2004, a referendum was held to amend Article 81 of the Constitution of Belarus abolishing the restriction on the possibility for one and the same person to stay in office as president for no more than two five-year terms.
