Belarus’ companies report Br5.82bn net losses in Jan-Mar 2020

The total net losses of Belarusian enterprises totaled Br5.82 billion ($2.379 billion at the exchange rate of the National Bank of Belarus) January-March 2020 against a net profit of Br3.136 billion ($1.282 billion) in January-March 2019, the National Statistics Committee (Belstat) said in a statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> Revenues from sales of products, goods, works and services in the first quarter of 2020 amounted to Br59.449 billion ($24.303 billion), up 4.1% year on year. The cost of sales stood at Br47.777 billion ($19.531bn), up 3.3%. </p> <p> </p> <p> The return on sales was at 9.2% in Jan-Mar 2020 against 8.7% in Jan-Mar 2019: in industry – 10.7% (10.6% in Jan-Mar 2019), agriculture – 6.1% (5.8%), construction – 10.9% (5.1%), wholesale and retail trade, car and motorcycle repair – 2.4% (1.8%), transport – 10.9% (10.5%), information and telecommunication – 30.5% (27.1%). </p> <p> </p> <p> The share of loss-making enterprises made up 24.2% in 1Q20 (18.5% in Jan-Mar 2019). Their number increased to 1,651 in Jan-Mar 2020 from 1,262 in Jan-Mar 2019. Their net losses totaled Br9.533 billion ($3.897bn) in the first quarter of 2020, up 42% year on year. </p> <p> </p> <p> The share of loss-making enterprises in industry was at 33.9% in 1Q20 against 20.4% in 1Q19 (539 in Jan-Mar 2020 against 324 in Jan-Mar 2019), in agriculture – 11.4% (10.8% in Jan-Mar 2019, 149 against 141), construction – 23.3% (25%, 207 against 222), wholesale and retail trade, car and motorcycle repair – 34.9% (26%, 303 against 226 ), transport – 30.6% (19.9%, 163 against 106), information and telecommunication – 10.3% (13.9%, 28 against 38). </p> <p> </p> <p> As reported, the net profit of Belarusian companies in 2019 amounted to Br10.721 billion ($4.383 billion), up 80% year on year.
