Belarus’ budget deficit may reach Br2.6bn in 2020 – FinMin

Belarus’ national budget deficit may reach 2.6 billion Belarusian rubles ($1.016 billion at the rate of the National Bank of Belarus) in 2020, or nearly 2% of gross domestic product (GDP), Deputy Finance Minister of Belarus Elena Pechen said after an extended session of the Presidium of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus held on December 9, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> “According to preliminary forecasts, the republican budget deficit [in 2020] will not exceed 2% of GDP, and will amount to around Br2.6 billion. A considerable amount has been raised this year to cope with the pandemic. As of today, direct budget spending totals Br450 million ($175.973 million). Support was also provided to the real sector of the economy,” BelTA state newswire quotes Pechen as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> The ministry also forecasts a budget deficit of around 3% of GDP in 2021, she said. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Finance Ministry reported a Br583.5 million ($228.179 million) national budget deficit in January-October 2020 (0.5% of GDP). </p> <p> </p> <p> The national budget deficit in 2020 was planned at Br995.1 million ($389.136m), around 1% of GDP.
