Belarus begins licensing of cardboard and paper packaging import
<p> MINSK, Feb 9 - PrimePress. Belarus has introduced licensing of the import of cardboard and paper packaging, as per government resolution No.76 of February 8, 2021, Bellesbumprom Concern reports. </p> <p> </p> <p> In accordance with the resolution, the import of some types of cardboard and paper packaging in Belarus under the customs procedure of release for domestic consumption will be carried out under one-time licences to be issued by the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade (MART) in coordination with Bellesbumprom. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Foreign Ministry of Belarus was instructed to notify the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) of this and to propose that other member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) do the same. </p> <p> </p> <p> The resolution followed the reported increase in the import of paper and cardboard packaging, including from Ukraine, which led to a decrease in production of these products at the pulp and paper mills of Belarus and underutilization of the production capacities. </p> <p> </p> <p> The import of crates and boxes made from corrugated paper and cardboard from Ukraine has increased by 70% in the past five years; bags and sacks – by 190%. The significant increase in the import volumes was often accompanied by lower import prices, which undermined the competitiveness of Belarusian goods and their substitution with imported goods. Bellesbumprom’s production capacity can thus fully satisfy domestic demand for cardboard and paper packaging and substitute packaging imported from Ukraine to the tune of around $15.6 million, reads the statement. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Bellesbumprom, Belarus can annually produce 220 million square meters of corrugated cardboard transport packaging and up to 70 million paper bags and sacks per month. Bellesbumprom’s facilities for production of corrugated cardboard transport packaging are utilized by 62%; for production of paper bags and sacks – by 35% on average. End </p>
