Belarus banks’ profits down 22% in Jan-Jul 2020 to Br501.3m

Belarusian banks’ total balance sheet profit amounted to 501.3 million Belarusian rubles (Br) in January-JuLy 2020, or U.S. $188.2 million at the official rate of the central bank, down 22% on the year, the National Bank of Belarus said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Banks’ regulatory capital stood at Br11.387 billion ($4.276bn) as of August 1, 2020, up 2% year on year (up 5.8% from Aug 1, 2019). </p> <p> </p> <p> Capital adequacy ratio stood at 16.8% as of Aug 1, 2020, to compare with 17.8% as of Jan 1, 2020, 18.5% as of Aug 1, 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> Return on equity of Belarusian commercial banks was at 9.3% as of Aug 1, 2020, to compare with 10.9% as of Jan 1, 2020 and 10.8% as of Aug 1, 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarusian banks’ assets stood at Br86.064 billion ($32.317bn) as of Aug 1, 2020, up 9.9% year on year (up 17.2% from Aug 1, 2020). </p> <p> </p> <p> Return on assets stood at 1.2% as of Aug 1, 2020 (1.5% as of Jan 1, 2020), to compare with 1.5% as of Aug 1, 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> As of Aug 1, 2020, the total value of non-performing loans (NPL) stood at Br3.402 billion ($1.277bn), up 24.7% from Jan 1, 2020, up 8.7% from Aug 1, 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> Provisions for assets exposed to credit risk grew by 21.2% in Jan-Jul 2020 to Br4.434 billion ($1.665bn) as of Aug 1, 2020, (up 22.5% year on year).
