Belarus banks’ profits down 13.5% in 2020 to Br1.017bn

Belarusian banks’ total balance sheet profit amounted to 1.017 billion Belarusian rubles (Br) in 2020, or U.S. $387.3 million at the official rate of the central bank, down 13.5% on the year, the National Bank of Belarus said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Banks’ regulatory capital stood at Br12.234 billion ($4.658bn) as of January 1, 2021, up 9.6% year on year. </p> <p> </p> <p> Capital adequacy ratio stood at 17.2% as of Jan 1, 2021, to compare with 17.8% as of Jan 1, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> Return on equity of Belarusian commercial banks was at 8.9% as of Jan 1, 2021, to compare with 10.9% as of Jan 1, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarusian banks’ assets stood at Br90.569 billion ($34.487bn) as of Jan 1, 2021, up 15.6% year on year. </p> <p> </p> <p> Return on assets stood at 1.1% as of Jan 1, 2021 (1.5% as of Jan 1, 2020). </p> <p> </p> <p> As of Jan 1, 2021, the total value of non-performing loans (NPL) amounted to Br3.457 billion ($1.316bn), up 26.8% from Jan 1, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> Provisions for assets exposed to credit risk grew by 30% in 2020 to Br4.756 billion ($1.811bn) as of Jan 1, 2021.
