Belarus banks’ net foreign assets up 5.3% to minus $3.831bn in Jan-Aug 2021

Net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions amounted to minus $3.831 billion as of Sep 1, 2021, up 5.3% year to date, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Net foreign assets of commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions increased by 2.8% in Jan-Aug 2021 to $1.558 billion, while foreign liabilities of banks grew by 4.6% to $5.389 billion as of Sep 1, 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> As of Sep 1, 2021 deposits accounted for $778.3 million of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ net foreign assets (down 9.8% year to date), credits – $99.8m (down 42.6%), foreign exchange – $525.9m (up 9.4%), securities (except shares) – $48.2m (up 0.4%), other assets – $105.4m (up 2 times). </p> <p> </p> <p> Credits accounted for $4.796bn of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ external liabilities as of Sep 1, 2021 (up 5.8% year to date), deposits – $572.7m (down 2%), securities (except shares) – $0.00 compared with $0.00 as of Jan 1, 2021, other liabilities - $19.6m (down 44.2%). </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2020, net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions reduced by 14.8% to minus $3.637 billion as of January 1, 2021.
