Belarus banks’ net foreign assets down 16.4% to minus $3.686bn in Jan-Nov 2020

Net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions amounted to minus U.S. $3.686 billion as of December 1, 2020, down 16.4% in January-November 2020, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Net foreign assets of commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions decreased by 15.8% in Jan-Nov 2020 to $1.558 billion, while foreign liabilities of banks grew by 4.5% to $5.244 billion as of Dec 1, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> Deposits accounted for $831.4 million of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ net foreign assets (down 4.5% against Jan 1, 2020), credits – $111m (down 70.8%), foreign exchange – $467.7m (up 23.8%), securities (except shares) – $52.4m (down 61.9%), other assets – $95.8m (up 13.3%). </p> <p> </p> <p> Credits accounted for $4.664bn of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ external liabilities as of Dec 1, 2020 (up 7.5% against Jan 1, 2020), deposits – $552m (down 16.1%), securities (except shares) – $0.00 compared with $0.00 as of Jan 1, 2020, other liabilities - $28.6m (up 42.2%). </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2019, net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions reduced by 24.1% to minus $3.168 billion as of January 1, 2019.
