Belarus banks’ net foreign assets down 14.8% to minus $3.637bn in 2020

Net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions amounted to minus U.S. $3.637 billion as of Jan 1, 2021, down 14.8% year on year, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Net foreign assets of commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions decreased by 18.1% in 2020 to $1.515 billion, while foreign liabilities of banks grew by 2.7% to $5.151 billion as of Jan 1, 2021. </p> <p> </p> <p> Deposits accounted for $863.2 million of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ net foreign assets (down 0.9% year on year), credits – $70m (down 81.6%), foreign exchange – $480.5m (up 27.2%), securities (except shares) – $48m (down 65.1%), other assets – $53m (down 37.3%). </p> <p> </p> <p> Credits accounted for $4.532bn of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ external liabilities as of Jan 1, 2021 (up 4.4% year on year), deposits – $584.6m (down 11.2%), securities (except shares) – $0.00 compared with $0.00 as of Jan 1, 2020, other liabilities - $35.1m (up 74.9%). </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2019, net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions reduced by 24.1% to minus $3.168 billion as of January 1, 2019.
