Belarus banks’ net foreign assets down 12.8% to minus $3.572bn in Jan-Oct 2020

Net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions amounted to minus U.S. $3.572 billion as of November 1, 2020, down 12.8% in January-October 2020, the National Bank of Belarus (NBB) said in a statistical report. </p> <p> </p> <p> Net foreign assets of commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions decreased by 11.8% in Jan-Oct 2020 to $1.633 billion, while foreign liabilities of banks grew by 3.7% to $5.205 billion as of Nov 1, 2020. </p> <p> </p> <p> Deposits accounted for $943.1 million of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ net foreign assets (up 8.3% against Jan 1, 2020), credits – $125.5m (down 66.9%), foreign exchange – $444.7m (up 17.7%), securities (except shares) – $52.2m (down 62.1%), other assets – $67.4m (down 20.3%). </p> <p> </p> <p> Credits accounted for $4.63bn of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions’ external liabilities as of Nov 1, 2020 (up 6.7% against Jan 1, 2020), deposits – $547.3m (down 16.8%), securities (except shares) – $0.00 compared with $0.00 as of Jan 1, 2020, other liabilities - $27.2m (up 35.3%). </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2019, net foreign assets of Belarusian commercial banks and non-banking credit-and-finance institutions reduced by 24.1% to minus $3.168 billion as of January 1, 2019.
