Belarus’ aviation industry losing $10.3m per month due to western sanctions

The monthly losses of the Belarusian aviation industry due to western sanctions are estimated at $10.3 million, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Sivak said at a joint meeting of both chambers of Belarus’ parliament on June 25. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Sivak, the aviation industry faces a complicated task of recovering from revenue losses caused not only by the pandemic but by restrictions introduced by the European Union, the UK, and Ukraine. </p> <p> </p> <p> “On the whole, sanction-related losses of the aviation industry are estimated at $10.3 million per month. Since aircraft are forced to fly around Ukraine, it has resulted in longer flights and much higher costs. The increase in costs in July-December 2021 is estimated at about $5 million,” BelTA reports citing Sivak as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> On May 23, a Vilnius-bound Ryanair plane that took off from Athens made an emergency landing at Minsk International Airport after a reported bomb threat. A MiG-29 fighter jet alert crew was scrambled to escort the plane. After the landing, the plane was inspected and no bomb was found on board. Among the passengers on that flight was Roman Protasevich, one of the co-founders of the Nexta Telegram channel recognized as extremist in Belarus. He was arrested and faces charges under three articles of the Criminal Code of Belarus. End </p> <p> </p> <p> European countries said Minsk had forced the aircraft to land at its airport under a invented pretext. Some airlines decided to fly bypassing Belarusian airspace. The EU Council also banned the use of the airspace and airports of the European Union by Belarusian air carriers. End </p>
