Belarus' aviation authorities: No notification from Lithuania about flight restrictions

Lithuania has not notified Minsk about its decision to introduce flights restrictions over Belarus' airspace, Artyom Sikorsky, director of the Aviation Department at the Transport Ministry of Belarus, told a news briefing on May 24. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Lithuania decided that all flights to and from Lithuanian airports must avoid the airspace of neighbouring Belarus, Lithuanian Transport Minister Marius Skuodis said on Monday. In his words, the ban will come into effect at 3 a.m. on May 25 (midnight GMT). Earlier, on 24 May, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte said that the country would not allow flights that had crossed or planned to cross Belarusian airspace. </p> <p> </p> <p> "Lithuania has not notified the official Minsk about these restrictions," Artyom Sikorsky said. </p> <p> </p> <p> In his words, Belarus regrets to admit that Lithuania’s decision not to accept planes traveling through Belarus at its airports is driven by emotions, not by safety concerns. </p> <p> </p> <p> He recalled that preliminary information about the incident with the Ryanair aircraft in Minsk was sent to the ICAO, as well as to the aviation authorities of the states of registration and operation of the aircraft. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to him, as for now, only several flights that were to travel through Belarus have been cancelled. This is economically unprofitable for airlines, Sikorsky noted. </p> <p> </p> <p> “There are no threats to aircraft that cross the Belarusian airspace. We can assure everyone of that,” he added.
