Belarus analyzing potential of Russia’s Leningrad Region ports for possible diversification of cargo shipment

A delegation headed by Belarus’ First Deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Snopkov is visiting Russia’s Leningrad Region to explore the potential of Leningrad ports for possible diversification of Belarusian cargo flows, reads a message posted by the press service of the Leningrad Region Administration. </p> <p> </p> <p> The delegation is analyzing the details of project solutions, types of storage areas, as well as the conditions of special economic zones and areas of advanced development. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Today we are beginning to implement the message of the two heads of state on the possibility of reorienting Belarus’ cargoes to the port facilities of the Russian Federation in Leningrad Region. This is only the beginning of a long way,” said Alexander Drozdenko, the governor of Leningrad Region. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, in late August Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko instructed the Government of Belarus to make a proposal on reorienting trade flows from Lithuanian ports to other directions. Such a step was motivated as a response to the sanctions pressure from Lithuania. Lukashenko emphasized that that the redirection of cargo flows must be economically justified – Russia is expected to offer preferences for rail delivery and transshipment for Belarusian cargoes. </p> <p> </p> <p> In late September, at a meeting with Drozdenko, Lukashenko proposed to cooperate and build a joint seaport in Leningrad Region. He noted that the funds saved on the construction of the Belarusian nuclear plant in Astravyets could be allocated for this purpose. End </p> <p> </p>
