beCloud, A1 operators report fivefold increase in 4G coverage in Minsk Oblast to 89%

Belarus’ infrastructure operator becloud and A1 - Belarusian provider of telecommunications, ICT and content services, have completed operations to expand their 4G network in Minsk Oblast, having increased their 4G coverage by five times to 89%, reads a press release of the telecom companies. </p> <p> </p> <p> Currently, high-speed LTE Internet access services are available to over 98% of private households in the region. </p> <p> </p> <p> While implementing the project in Minsk Oblast, the operators installed more than 240 base stations in the 800 MHz frequency band, which ensures broad geographic coverage and reliable signal reception in rural areas, including built-up areas beyond the limits of settlements. In addition, they plan to activate over 60 base stations within a month in order to improve coverage in the area. </p> <p> </p> <p> Minsk Oblast has already become the third region of Belarus where the project to expand the coverage area of the 4G network has been implemented within the framework of cooperation between beCloud and A1. Prior to that, since July 2020, similar work has been carried out in Gomel Oblast and Mogilev Oblast. beCloud, as an infrastructure operator, is engaged in the construction, operation and development of a unified LTE Advanced network in Belarus. On the part of A1, the partnership consists in providing beCloud with its technical infrastructure as well as a transport network based on hybrid, radio-relay and fibre-optic lines for the installation of the infrastructure operator’s 4G-enabled equipment. </p> <p> </p> <p> Future plans for beCloud and A1 include the expansion of the LTE network in Vitebsk Oblast. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the Ministry of Communications of Belarus, as of 1 Apr 2021, GSM standard (2G) mobile coverage in Belarus was 98.7%, UMTS (3G) - 98.4% and LTE (4G) - 42.8%. The population coverage of these standards is 99.9%, 99.9% and 92% respectively. </p> <p> </p> <p> Belarus Cloud Technologies JLLC (beCloud) was established in 2012, with a 51% held by the National Traffic Exchange Centre. In December 2015, beCloud launched its LTE Advanced network (4G) in Minsk. beCloud stands behind 4 infrastructural projects in Belarus: the national datacom network, the national data processing centre, the cloud platform, and the LTE Advanced network. </p> <p> </p> <p> Established in 1998, A1 unitary enterprise is now fully owned by A1 Telekom Austria Group. The mobile operator A1 started revenue service of its 3G network based on the HSPA/HSPA+ technology in March 2010. The operator made 4G mobile internet services available to customers in March 2019.
