Babariko calls on law enforcers to obey the law at all times
<p> MINSK, Jun 11 - PrimePress. An aspirant to Belarus’ presidency, Viktor Babariko, has called on representatives of law enforcement agencies to observe the law in all situations. He said this during an emergency press conference following police search raids on the offices of Belgazprombank and Privat Leasing LLC on June 11. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, on May 12, 2020, Belgazprombank CEO Viktor Babariko announced his intention to run for Belarus’ presidency. The same day it became known that he had resigned as of Belgazprombank chief. Babariko was born in Minsk on November 9, 1963. He graduated fr om the Belarusian State University in 1988, from the Academy of Management under the Cabinet of Ministers of Belarus - in 1995. Has been working in the banking sector since July 1995. July 2000 - May 2020 - Chairman of the Board of Belgazprombank. </p> <p> </p> <p> The searches were supposedly carried out as part of a criminal case of tax evasion investigated by the Financial Investigation Department of the State Control Committee of Belarus. “I would also like to appeal to the law enforcement agencies, which are forced to perform these actions. I ask them only one thing: obey the law of our country,” said Babariko. </p> <p> </p> <p> He noted that under the law, there can be no claims against the bank and its affiliated companies. “My activity as chairman of Belgazprombank for 20 years has not caused any comments from the point of view of law enforcement agencies. During this time Belgazprombank passed international audits, audits by Belarusian companies, was analyzed by audit companies of our shareholders, was audited by the National Bank. And the last audit, which had an extraordinary and urgent nature, was completed in January 2020. None of these audits have revealed any significant criticism of Belgazprombank activities, which could be the reason for such actions today with regard to the bank employees,” he said. </p> <p> </p> <p> “Therefore, it is necessary to conclude that today’s actions are of political nature. I do not assert it, but it may be the case. This is unacceptable. Because using any position for pressure is contrary to the legislation of Belarus,” said Babariko. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, The presidential election in Belarus is scheduled for August 9, 2020. The first presidential election took place on June 23 (first round) and July 10, 1994 (second round). Alexander Lukashenko has been staying in office ever since. A referendum on amendments to Article 81 of the Constitution of Belarus, which abolished the lim it of two five-year presidential terms for one person, was held on October 17, 2004. End </p>
