Ambassador Mezentsev takes over from Rapota as Union Secretary of State

Russia’s former Ambassador to Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev has taken over from Grigori Rapota as State Secretary of the Union State of Russia and Belarus, in accordance with Resolution #1 signed by Chairman of the Supreme State Council of the Union State, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on March 19. </p> <p> </p> <p> Mezentsev had served as Russian ambassador to Belarus since 30 April 2019. He was relieved from that post on 19 March 2021 by an order issued by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Prior to his appointment in Minsk, Mezentsev had been a member of the Russian Federation Council from the Sakhalin Region since 2016. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, the current Russian ambassador to Latvia, Yevgeny Lukyanov, may become the new head of the Russian diplomatic mission in Minsk. The State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots approved his appointment as ambassador to Belarus on 10 March 2021. End </p> <p> </p>
