Lithuania’s BKT hopes to maintain volumes of Belarus’ potash fertilizers transshipment
MINSK, Jul 13 - PrimePress. Lithuanian Biriu kroviniu terminalas (BKT) that has long-term contracts with Belaruskali (Soligorsk, Minsk Oblast) for the transshipment of Belarusian potash fertilizers in the Klaipeda port expects that the volumes of transshipment will be maintained, considering it premature to talk about diversifying cargo flows because of the Western sanctions, BKT co-owner Igor Udovitsky told BNS newswire.

He said transit of fertilizers did not fall under sanctions, so BKT hopes to maintain the transshipment volumes. The BKT terminal is currently ready to transship 15-16 million tonnes of potash fertilizers per year. This cargo traffic is not expected before 2024-2025, said Udovitsky.

As previously reported, Belaruskali exports its products mainly through the port of Klaipeda (Lithuania). Transshipment amounts to 10-11 million tonnes per year. Belaruskali owns 30% of Biriu kroviniu terminalas, while Udovitsky controls 70% of the company.

Belarus increased the export of potash fertilizers in 2020 by 14.68% year on year to 7.143 million tonnes in terms of 100% nutrient content. In monetary terms, the export decreased by 10.26% to $2.721 billion.

on June 24, 2021, the EU Council imposed sanctions against the largest sectors of the Belarusian economy for escalating human rights violations in Belarus and the incident with the forced landing of the Ryanair plane in Minsk on May 23, 2021. The EU’s ban on the import and transit of potash from Belarus does not apply at this stage to the main product of Belaruskali–potassium chloride with a nutrient content of 60%.

The ban applies to potash with a K2O content of below 40% and over 62% (technical potash used in metallurgy, chemical, petrochemical and other industries). Potassium with 60% K2O content, which is the most popular potash fertilizer in the world is not on the list of banned products, while Belarus’ multiple-nutrient fertilizers with potassium chloride (produced by Belaruskali and the Gomel Chemical Plant) are on the list.
