First unit of BelNPP disconnected from grid by generator auto-protection system Jul 12, 2021 – Energy Ministry
MINSK, July 12 - PrimePress. The first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets District, Grodno Oblast) was disconnected from the power grid on July 12, 2021 by the generator auto-protection system, the press office of the Belarusian Energy Ministry reports.<br> <br> In line with the standard procedure the output of the reactor unit was reduced. The radiation levels at the nuclear power plant and in the observation area did not change. Reasons for the disconnection of the electric generator are being investigated. Once they are removed, the unit will be powered up again.<br> <br> As previously reported, the 1st power unit of the BelNPP was connected to the national grid on November 3, 2020. The unit was routinely shut down on February 20, 2021 to conduct tests and routine maintenance in accordance with the program of the pilot operation stage, and was reconnected on March 8. It was shut down again on March 10 after a series of shutdowns and activations.<br> <br> Belarus’ first nuclear power plant in Ostrovets (a town in the Grodno Oblast also referred to as Astravyets) will have two units with a combined capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The AES-2006 Russian standard design of (generation 3+) was chosen for its construction. Rosatom’s division Atomstroyexport acts as the general contractor for the NPP construction. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant RUE is the project customer and the future operator of the NPP. The ceremony of the official launch of the NPP took place in early November 2020. The first power unit was put into commercial operation in June 10, 2021. According to decree No.447 of November 30, 2020, the second unit is expected to be put into operation in the first half of 2022. End<br> <br>
