BMZ suspends steel production, as workers engage in protest

Belarusian Steel Works (BMZ) temporarily shut down the blast furnaces, as the company workers went out for a solidarity action during the day, Prime reports, citing a BMZ employee. </p> <p> </p> <p> The BMZ trade union committee said earlier that the rolling mill would be stopped from 12 o’clock on August 17. “This is temporary. The furnaces do not produce steel, yet they remain heated and operational,” said the source. </p> <p> </p> <p> RIA Novosti news agency reported later that day that BMZ resumed normal operation. The blast furnaces have been brought back to normal operation after being suspended as part of the protest action. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to the source, several hundred metallurgists discuss further steps. They are going to make demands on a new election and defending of their rights, including by means of a strike. </p> <p> </p> <p> The Belarusian Steel Works was put into operation in 1984, and transformed into OJSC BMZ-Managing Company of the Belarusian Metallurgical Company Holding in 2012.
