Belarus’ Academy of Sciences to propose extending preferential electricity tariffs to gardening associations
MINSK, Jul 8 - PrimePress. The Institute of Energy of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Belarus will make a proposal to extend preferential electricity tariffs for gardening associations, Director of the Institute of Energy Anton Brin told Respublika newspaper.

“Today, preferential tariffs apply to private real estate, while many gardening associations have no gas, and they would gladly use electricity for heating, instead of stoking wood stoves,” said Brin.

He said the consumption of electricity for heating and hot water supply by households in the first four months of 2021 increased fourfold year on year to 122 million kWh, which exceeded the annual consumption in 2020.

According to Brin, energy from the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP, Astravyets, Grodno Oblast) is planned to be used as efficient as possible. Electric energy for housing would ensure the efficient use of the BelNPP capacities. The housing prices reduce, because heating and gas pipelines account for a large proportion of costs. In the next five years, Belarus plans to provide slightly over 2 million square meters of new housing fully supplied with electricity.

Household consumption of electricity for heating and hot water supply in 2020 increased 7-fold against 2019 from 12.9 million kWh to 89.4 million kWh.

As previously reported, the Energy Ministry of Belarus has approved a program to increase electricity consumption by households with the forthcoming commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in 2021-2025. By the end of 2025, electricity consumption for heating, hot water supply and cooking is expected to increase to 900 million kWh to compare with 12.88 million kWh in 2019 and 53.8 million kWh in January-October 2020.
