Ukrainian Energy Ministry asks regulator to ban electricity imports from Russia, Belarus

Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko has asked the National Commission for State Regulation in the Sphere of Energy and Utilities (NKREKU) to ban electricity imports from Russia and Belarus, according to the ministry’s website. </p> <p> </p> <p> “This contradicts Ukraine’s strategic goals in the energy sector (in particular, synchronization of the United Energy System of Ukraine with the European Network of System Electricity Transmission Operators ENTSO-E) and potentially threatens energy security,” says the minister’s letter published on the website. </p> <p> </p> <p> According to Prime, the National Commission for State Regulation in the Sphere of Energy and Utilities (NKREKU) allowed traders to import electricity from Russia and Belarus from 1 January 2021. Ukraine on 3 January resumed imports of electricity from Belarus and on 1 February from Russia. </p> <p> </p> <p> The ministry explained that the key requirement for the Ukrainian energy system to join ENTSO-E is to ensure that its own generating capacity is sufficient to cover the projected demand for electricity. </p> <p> </p> <p> Ukraine suspended electricity import from Russia and Belarus in April 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Head of the National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities of Ukraine Valeriy Tarasyuk said in May that Ukraine should resume it once the pandemic is over. </p> <p> </p> <p> In 2020, Belarus exported 653.2 million kWh of electricity (72% less than in 2019) worth $34.299 million (72% less than in 2019). The average price of electricity exported from Belarus in 2020 increased by 0.7% yoy, to $52.510 per thousand kWh. Belarus supplied electricity mainly to Lithuania (497 million kWh), as well as in small quantities to Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Latvia, and Estonia. End </p>
