Ukraine’s Energy Ministry advocates limiting electricity imports from Belarus, Russia

The Energy Ministry of Ukraine advocates “reasonable restrictions” on electricity import from Belarus and Russia. </p> <p> </p> <p> Ukraine’s Acting Energy Minister Yuriy Vitrenko made a statement to this effect at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on January 28. </p> <p> </p> <p> "As for electricity import from Russia and Belarus: there must be restrictions, but they must take into account the fact that we are still integrated with the system of Russia and Belarus ... But there must be reasonable restrictions even now. That said, our strategic goal is to join the European system," Prime news agency quoted Vitrenko as saying. </p> <p> </p> <p> The day before, on January 25, Vitrenko said on Savik Shuster's Freedom of Speech show that Ukraine should disconnect from the common energy system with Russia and Belarus and unite with the European grid. </p> <p> </p> <p> In December 2020, the National Commission for State Regulation in the Sphere of Energy and Utilities of Ukraine cancelled, as of January 1, 2021, the regulation implementing the legislation empowering it, inter alia, to cancel auctions for allocation of international cross-sections for import-export electricity with countries that are not members of the Energy Community, which allowed traders to import electricity from Russia and Belarus. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, Ukraine started importing electricity from Belarus in insignificant amounts on 3 January 2021. The Belarusian Energy Ministry plans to continue interagency negotiations with Ukraine on electricity sales. End </p>
