U.S. to re-impose sanctions on Belarus’ nine petrochemical companies

The U.S. Department of the Treasury will resume on 3 June 2021 the effect of economic sanctions on nine Belarusian companies - Belneftekhim Concern and its U.S. representative office, as well as Belneftekhim-controlled Belshina, Grodno Azot, Grodno Khimvolokno, Lakokraska, Naftan, Polotsk-Steklovolokno, and Belarusian Oil Trading House. </p> <p> </p> <p> The corresponding decision to lift the suspension of sanctions and to introduce a licence allowing certain transactions with these entities within 45 days was taken on 19 April 2021, according to a messages posted on the website of the U.S. Department of State. </p> <p> </p> <p> As previously reported, on March 31, 2021, Spokesman for the US Department of State, Ned Price, said that the U.S. would re-impose suspended sanctions against nine Belarusian companies, part of the state concern Belneftekhim. The suspension period will expire on April 26. </p> <p> </p> <p> The sanctions were imposed in 2006 for violations by the Belarusian authorities of the Iranian sanctions regime and political repression inside the country. Since October 2015, restrictive measures against Belarusian companies have been partially suspended due to progress in the area of human rights, in particular, the release of all political prisoners. The US Department of the Treasury lifted sanctions against nine Belarusian petrochemical companies in October 2015. Until 2018, the decision was reviewed every six months; the suspension was extended for a year in 2018 and for another year and a half in 2019. </p> <p> </p> <p> After the presidential election in Belarus on August 9, 2020, in which Lukashenko was declared the winner for the sixth time with 80.1% of the vote, and the crackdown on peaceful protests that followed, the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and their allies imposed sanctions against Belarusian officials, including President Alexander Lukashenko, and some companies associated with them.
